It was composed of <a title=\"Hydrogen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen\">hydrogen<\/a> and <a title=\"Helium\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helium\">helium<\/a> created <a title=\"Recombination (cosmology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recombination_(cosmology)\">shortly after<\/a> the <a title=\"Big Bang\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Bang\">Big Bang<\/a> 13.8\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gigaannum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gigaannum#SI_prefix_multipliers\">Ga<\/a> (billion years ago) and heavier <a title=\"Chemical element\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chemical_element\">elements<\/a> ejected by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Supernovae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supernovae\">supernovae<\/a>. About 4.5\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"A (year)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_(year)\">Ga<\/a>, the nebula began a contraction that may have been triggered by the <a title=\"Shock wave\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shock_wave\">shock wave<\/a> from a nearby <a title=\"Supernova\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supernova\">supernova<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Matson_24-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Earth#cite_note-Matson-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup> A shock wave would have also made the nebula rotate. As the cloud began to accelerate, its <a title=\"Abiogenesis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Angular_momentum\">angular momentum<\/a>, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gravitation\">gravity<\/a>, and <a title=\"Inertia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inertia\">inertia<\/a> flattened it into a <a title=\"Protoplanetary disk\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protoplanetary_disk\">protoplanetary disk<\/a> perpendicular to its axis of rotation.
