He was born in <a title=\"Reading, Pennsylvania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reading,_Pennsylvania\">Reading, Pennsylvania<\/a>, educated at <a title=\"Harvard University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harvard_University\">Harvard<\/a> and then <a title=\"New York Law School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Law_School\">New York Law School<\/a>, and spent most of his life working as an executive for an insurance company in <a title=\"Hartford, Connecticut\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hartford,_Connecticut\">Hartford, Connecticut<\/a>. He won the <a title=\"Pulitzer Prize for Poetry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pulitzer_Prize_for_Poetry\">Pulitzer Prize for Poetry<\/a> for his <i>Collected Poems<\/i> in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens&#8217;s first period of writing begins with the 1923 publication of <i><a title=\"Harmonium (poetry collection)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harmonium_(poetry_collection)\">Harmonium<\/a><\/i>, followed by a slightly revised and amended second edition in 1930. His second period occurred in the 11 years immediately preceding the publication of his <i>Transport to Summer<\/i>, when Stevens had written three volumes of poems including <i>Ideas of Order<\/i>, <i><a title=\"The Man with the Blue Guitar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Man_with_the_Blue_Guitar\">The Man with the Blue Guitar<\/a><\/i>, <i>Parts of a World<\/i>, along with <i>Transport to Summer<\/i>.
