\nThe Dao that can be told is not the timeless Dao.
\nThe name that can be named is not the eternal name.
\nHeaven and earth emerged from the nameless.
\nThe named is the mother of all things.
\nLose desire and see the Dao’s essence.
\nHave desire and see the Dao’s manifestations.
\nThese two have the same source but different names.
\nTheir sameness is a mystery,
\nmystery of mysteries,
\ngateway of untold secrets.<\/p>\n

Dao is an empty vessel,
\nused without ever being filled,
\nunfathomably deep, the source of all things,
\nwhere sharpness blunts,
\nknots untangle,
\nglare mellows,
\ndust coalesces.
\nSo hidden, in nonbeing it is being.
\nWho knows whose child it is,
\nthis ancestor of the gods?<\/p>\n

Thirty spokes join at one hub;
\nemptiness makes the cart useful.
\nCast clay into a pot;
\nthe emptiness inside makes it useful.
\nCut doors and windows to make a room;
\nemptiness makes the room useful.
\nThus being is beneficial,
\nbut usefulness comes from the void.<\/p>\n

\nWithout walking out the door,
\nknow the whole universe.
\nWithout looking out the window
\nsee the Way of heaven.
\nThe farther you go, the less you know.
\nThus the sage knows by staying still,
\nfathoms without seeing,
\nachieves through nonaction.<\/p>\n

\nNothing is softer and more yielding than water,
\nyet nothing is better in attacking the solid and forceful
\nbecause nothing can take its place.
\nWeak conquers strong, soft conquers hard.
\nNo one doesn’t know this,
\nyet who practices it?
\nThus the sage says,
\n“The state’s true master takes on
\nthe country’s disgrace
\nand by taking on the country’s misfortunes is king under heaven.”
\nStraight speech may seem like paradox.<\/p>\n
